To 2011 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The next year started my voluntary action in Alma Zois. Until then I had never dealt with volunteering, three years later, I wonder why.
When I learned that Alma Zois was looking for volunteers to organize the Greece Race for the Cure ® 2012 I found it as an opportunity, an opportunity for me to learn what is breast cancer, how the women who have it they experienced it and how can I help my mother to face the disease as painlessly as possible.
Today I realize that the volunteer work I offer to the organization of the Greece Race for the Cure ® helped me understand better the concepts of solidarity and selfless giving. Through my participation stopped to be viewer to the problem of my fellowman and start to travel together. The fact that every time I see women facing breast cancer with strength, optimism and smile, teaches the value of the power of the soul.
Importantly, however, above all of the things that my voluntary offered me are are the strong friendships that I created with people running for the same purpose, because we share the same feelings, we laugh loudly during both the preparatory and day fight, we hold hand each other cry when listening to a woman with breast cancer experience, we are a team and we face the difficulties that will arise on that date.
In flooded many emotions when you see the Zappeion full of women, men, children, mothers with prams and know that you have put a little bit to organize all this.
I do not know if the rest volunteers feel the same, however, for me, one thing is for sure, I added a new chapter in the book of my life and this is called, Volunteering: The transition from “me” to “us”.
